Temporary Skill Shortage Visa (Subclass 482)

iWise’s Temporary Skill Shortage Visa

A temporary Skill Shortage visa (subclass 482) or “TSS visa” is a work visa that lets Australian employers sponsor a foreign worker to work in their business in Australia.

This work visa was first given out on March 19, 2019. It took the place of the Temporary Work visa subclass 457, which DHA got rid of.

If you have the skills to work for an employer in Australia who wants to hire you, you might be eligible for the TSS visa.

Employer Nomination Scheme

The TSS visa has three (3) ways to get it:

  • The short-term flow
  • The medium-term flow
  • The stream of the Labour Agreement
  • The Consolidated Skilled Occupations list can help determine which stream is right for you. If your job makes you eligible for the short-term stream, your TSS visa will only be approved for two (2) years. If your job qualifies you under the medium-term stream, your TSS visa will be approved for four (4) years.

How do I know if I’m eligible for a Temporary Skill Shortage visa (subclass 482)?

The TSS visa has the following general requirements:

    • You have a job on the Consolidated Skilled Occupations List. An Australian employer has put you forward for a job position and wants to hire you.
    • You have the skills and qualifications that are needed for your job.
    • You’ve been working in your field for at least two years.
    • You can use English in your job.
    • You can meet the DHA’s standards for morality and health.
    • If you are in Australia, you have a permanent visa or a bridging visa A, B, or C, and you have met all your visa requirements.

Note: The TSS visa does not have an age limit.

How can an employer get a Temporary Skill Shortage visa (subclass 482)? What are the general requirements?

Employers who help foreign workers get a TSS visa to work in Australia must:

        • Be a business that is running legally.
        • Have nothing wrong to say about the company.
        • Choose a full-time job for the foreign worker that is real and full-time.
        • Pay and working condition requirements must be met.
        • If asked, show proof of testing the job market.

How do I apply for a Subclass 482 Temporary Skill Shortage visa?

            • Step 1: Check the Consolidated Skilled Occupation Lists to see if your job is on the list.

Step 2: Make sure you meet all the requirements to be eligible.

To apply, you must meet the following requirements:

              • Know how to speak English. Make sure you have health insurance while you’re in Australia.
              • All people who want an Australian visa must pass health and character checks.

Step 3: Find an employer in Australia willing to pay for you to work there. The Department of Home Affairs is where employers can fill out the employer sponsorship application online (DHA).

Step 4: Have an employer put you forward.

Once you find a job, your employer must put you forward for a TSS visa. You can apply for the visa at the same time that your employer uses to sponsor you and put your name on the list. The employer nomination application is filled out online through the DHA.

Step 5: Fill out a TSS Visa application.

You can apply for the 457 visas online through the DHA once the employer nomination application has been sent in.

Step 6: Wait for a choice to be made

The DHA might take a few months to decide on your visa application. In 2018, it took between 11 and 18 days to get a TSS visa.

Step 7: Get your work permit and get to work!

Once your application is approved, you will get your visa and can start working in Australia.
